Dedicated Servers

Enterprise class operating systems

CentOS

CentOS

Our distribution of choice for dedicated servers is CentOS, the Community ENTerprise Operating System, which is based on the open source Linux distribution from redhat.com.

With CentOS, you get a proven enterprise class operating system that is suitable for long term usage in production environments. We don't try to fit desktop class operating systems onto servers.

Along with CentOS, you can run all the most popular open source projects such as Apache Web Server, PHP, MySQL, Postgres, Ruby and Perl.

CloudLinux

If you're intending to run multiple websites on your dedicated server then we'd reccomend the extra expense of CloudLinux. It's the OS we use ourselves for our shared hosting with hundreds of sites on each server.

CloudLinux uses innovative Lightweight Virtualization Environment (LVE) technology to create isolation between multiple websites hosted on a server. By containing each website, CloudLinux prevents each one from using more resources than allocated, making sure that one website cannot affect another.

Easy server management

cPanel and WHM

Try cPanel out

To manage your server remotely we recommend cPanel and Web Host Manager from cPanel, the industry's leading control panel software. Even if you're a Linux guru, cPanel saves you valuable time in maintaining a server.

You can try out a demo of WHM and cPanel by clicking the graphic to your right.

A cPanel licence is currently £30 (inc VAT).

Webmin

webmin

Webmin is an open source control panel for managing a Linux server and whilst it doesn't have all the features of cPanel, it saves a system admin from resorting to the command line for every task.

You can find out more about Webmin by clicking the graphic to your right.

All recent versions of Webmin are under a BSD-like licence, meaning that it may be freely distributed and modified for commercial and non-commercial use.

Rebootless updates

Ksplice Uptrack

Servers require a reboot about once a month to stay up to date with important kernel security updates. We use Ksplice Uptrack which allows us to apply the same updates published by our Linux vendor, without rebooting.

Ksplice saves you time and pain by updating in seconds, while your systems are running, avoiding downtime and preventing disastrous security incidents by making it easy to stay up to date.

We include Ksplice Uptrack for FREE with our managed hosting support plan.
